Summer Stingers

Summer’s warm embrace also brings the buzz of flying insects. Like other creatures in
our environment, they all have a place. But some pose particular problems. They can
become nuisances and may pose dangers as well.

Wasps and hornets are a couple of species that fall into this category. Sometimes
confused with bees, here’s how you can tell them apart:

  • Wasps are solitary hunters that are characterized by slender waists and smooth abdomens. They’re attracted to sugary drinks and can be aggressive if their food source is threatened. Paper wasps and yellow jackets are two predominant wasp species in Oklahoma. You certainly don’t want to irritate either…especially yellow jackets…who are known to attack without provocation and are highly territorial around food.
  • Hornets are larger than wasps, with black and yellow markings. They build paper nests and aggressively defend them if disturbed.
  • Both bald-faced and European hornets reside in our area. Like yellow jackets, bald-faced hornets are quite protective of food sources and will sting repeatedly when they feel threatened.

Most people experience painful welts when stung by a wasp or hornet. Some develop
allergic reactions that can, in severe cases, result in death. Stumbling upon a nest in the
wild can result in an unexpected attack. Nests near doorways, patios, or play areas may
pose an even greater safety hazard as these are high traffic areas with lots of potential
for interaction with humans.

Keeping Your Home Sting-Free
You may have heard the expression “the best offense is a good defense.” That’s
certainly true in pest control…especially when dealing with wasps and hornets.

Prevention is your best strategy to keep these insects at bay. Seal cracks and gaps
around your home or business, especially eaves and soffits where wasps and hornets
often live. Keep outdoor trash cans tightly sealed so they won’t have an attractive food
source near your house. When outside, cover sugary drinks, put away ripe fruits, and try
not to leave food unattended.

Never attempt to remove a wasp or hornet nest yourself! These insects are highly
defensive, and disturbing their nest can trigger a swarm attack. Instead, contact a professional to remove the colony. We at KC Pest Control have the equipment and experience to safely remove nests.
