Battling Bugs in the Heat: A Homeowner’s Guide

When summer heat like we’re now experiencing kicks in, it’s not just people looking for
shade and cooler air. Pests are, too! Hot weather provides all the incentive insects and
rodents need to sneak indoors and multiply. That’s the bad news. The good news? With
a few smart steps, you can stay ahead of the creepy-crawlies and keep your home
comfortable and bug-free even during blistering hot days.

As temperatures rise food and water often become scarce. Ants and flies start crawling
out of their hiding spots looking to quench their thirst and locate nutrients. Cockroaches
and rodents get busy scouting for cooler, damp places to escape the heat. High
temperatures turn what few standing water pools remain into mosquito incubators.

In addition to migrating, hot weather speeds insect life cycles. Eggs hatch quicker,
which means new generations pop up sooner, resulting in population explosions.

Springtime humidity helps insects stay hydrated, while hot, dry stretches push them
indoors in search of water. Wasps and hornets thrive during long, hot summers, but
become territorial toward water sources.

Pests You’ll Notice Most in the Heat

Ants: Super active and constantly foraging for food and water, often ending up in
kitchens and pantries.
Cockroaches: Move indoors where it’s cooler and damp, especially in kitchens,
bathrooms, and basements.
Rodents: Mice and rats don’t like sweltering heat either—they’ll head inside looking for
cooler nesting spots.
Wasps and Hornets: Their nests grow faster in summer, and they become bolder
about defending them.

Simple Summer Pest-Prevention Tips
Seal it Up: Walk around your home and seal gaps around windows, doors, and where
pipes and cables enter.
Dump Standing Water: Empty anything that collects water—birdbaths, plant saucers,
clogged gutters—to stop mosquito breeding and reduce the amount of material
available for flying insects to build their nests.
Keep it Clean: Wipe counters, sweep crumbs, store food in sealed containers, and take
out the trash regularly.

Trim Trees and Bushes: Overhanging branches and shrubs can act like pest highways
leading straight into your home.
Fix Leaks and Damp Spots: Repair plumbing leaks, improve drainage, and run fans or
dehumidifiers in basements and attics.
Change Outdoor Lights: Yellow or sodium vapor bulbs don’t attract insects as much.
Place lights away from doors if possible.
Plant Bug-Repelling Greenery: Marigolds, lavender, and basil can naturally help keep
bugs at bay.
